Building Self-Esteem in Teenagers: Practical Activities for Parents

Adolescence is a stage filled with changes and challenges. During this period, self-esteem plays a crucial role in the emotional and social development of young people. As a psychologist working with teenagers and their families, I have had the opportunity to observe that strong self-esteem can be a protective factor against various behavioral and emotional problems. In this article, we will explore a set of practical activities that parents can carry out with their children to foster healthy self-esteem, based on experiences from cases treated in therapy.

## The Importance of Self-Esteem in Adolescence

Self-esteem refers to the perception we have of ourselves and how we value our abilities and characteristics. In adolescence, self-esteem can fluctuate due to social pressure, physical changes, and academic expectations. A teenager with good self-esteem tends to:

– **Establish healthy relationships**: They feel worthy of love and respect, which enhances their ability to connect with others.
– **Make sound decisions**: They trust their judgment and feel capable of facing challenges.
– **Manage stress better**: They have internal tools to deal with pressure and anxiety.

Conversely, low self-esteem can lead to behavioral problems, depression, and anxiety. Therefore, it is essential for parents to actively engage in building their children’s self-esteem.

## Practical Activities to Promote Self-Esteem

Here are some practical activities that can help parents work on the self-esteem of their teenagers. These activities have been effective in cases I have treated and can be adapted to the specific needs of each family.

### 1. **Achievement Journal**

**Objective**: Encourage recognition of achievements and strengths.

**Activity**: Encourage your child to keep a journal where they note their daily achievements, no matter how small. These can range from completing school tasks to helping at home. Review the journal together at the end of the week and celebrate the accomplishments. This helps the teenager recognize their worth and effort.

**Practical Example**: In one of my sessions, I worked with Laura, a teenager who felt insecure about her academic abilities. By keeping an achievement journal, she began to notice that her small daily victories motivated her and made her feel more confident in her school performance.

### 2. **Reflection Sessions on Skills**

**Objective**: Identify and value personal skills.

**Activity**: Dedicate time each week for your child to reflect on their skills. They can create a list of things they enjoy doing and in which they feel competent. This can include sports, art, social skills, etc. In the end, discuss how they can apply these skills in their daily life.

**Practical Example**: In a recent case, I worked with Miguel, a teenager who didn’t believe he had special skills. By doing this exercise, he discovered his talent for music and how he could get more involved in related activities, which improved his self-esteem.

### 3. **Volunteering Activities**

**Objective**: Foster empathy and self-worth through service.

**Activity**: Participate together in volunteering activities in the community. This not only helps others but also allows teenagers to see the positive impact they can have on the lives of others. By feeling useful, they can improve their self-perception.

**Practical Example**: A family I worked with decided to volunteer at a community kitchen. Their daughter, Paula, began to feel more valued as she saw how her effort helped others, which in turn strengthened her self-esteem.

### 4. **Positive Affirmation Exercises**

**Objective**: Reprogram negative thoughts about oneself.

**Activity**: Each morning, propose a positive affirmation exercise. They can write on a whiteboard or sticky notes phrases like “I am capable,” “I deserve to be happy,” or “I have much to offer.” Repeating these affirmations helps counteract negative self-talk.

**Practical Example**: In an intervention with David, a teenager who struggled with self-critical thoughts, we began working with affirmations. Over time, David started to feel more confident in himself and less influenced by his peers’ opinions.

### 5. **Setting Realistic Goals**

**Objective**: Foster self-efficacy and a sense of achievement.

**Activity**: Work with your child to set short-term and long-term goals. Ensure they are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-defined (SMART). Celebrate each achieved goal, no matter how small.

**Practical Example**: In sessions with Elena, we set goals related to her school performance. Each time she achieved a goal, we celebrated her success, which helped strengthen her self-esteem and motivation.

## Conclusions

Fostering self-esteem in teenagers is not a process that happens overnight; it requires time, patience, and effort from parents. However, the practical activities mentioned can be powerful tools to help young people develop a positive and healthy self-image. As we have seen in the examples, each teenager is unique, and adapting these activities to their interests and needs is key to their success.
